How do I find guests for my podcast?

One of the first things people think about when planning a podcast is who they would have on as guests. So it's no wonder this is one of the more common questions we get here at Blue Sky Podcasting. However, there's an art to finding a good podcast guest.

If you're at the bottom of your list of guests, there's no need to worry. We have a few tips to help get you started:

Phone a friend!

Chances are, you have a friend, family member, or coworker willing to share their experiences or shed light on a topic from a new perspective. Try making a list of people you know who could be a great fit, then reach out to them. They may be more willing to join because they know and trust you. And you can never deny the power of word of mouth. Referrals are always a great way to find new people. After recording, ask a guest if they could think of anyone who'd want to share their story on a podcast. You'll find that people are a lot more eager to share about themselves than you might expect.

Ask the experts!

If it's a situation where you need an expert on a particular subject, look for local and regional subject matter experts in your area and reach out to them. Let them know the why behind it. For example, suppose you're hosting a podcast about raising a family well. In that case, you should reach out to a local pediatrician or child psychologist to share their perspective on best practices. And if you're considering opening up to sponsorships down the line, having them as a guest could create an excellent relationship between you and that expert.

Meet someone new!

Sometimes, you've got to step out of your comfort zone. Thankfully there are plenty of ways to build new connections. There are podcast Facebook groups and forums where you can offer cross-promotion (going on their podcast). There are also some websites dedicated to finding podcast guests. A few that you can look into are matchmaker.fm and podmatch.com

Finding guests for your podcast can seem intimidating. But you have what it takes to make those connections.
